Destination: San Jose del Cabo, Mexico

October 2022, 25-year-old Shanquella Robinson flew to Mexico for a luxury vacation with a group of 6 friends. Within 24 hours, she was dead.

Cause of death? According to her "friends" it was alcohol poisoning. But then...
a video surfaced showing one of her so-called friends violently beating her. The autopsy revealed she died from severe spinal cord injuries, not alcohol poisoning as claimed.

Where it happened…San Jose del Cabo, Mexico

As you heard in this episode, San Jose del Cabo is often confused with Los Cabos. Mostly because, well, they’re usually both just referred to as “Cabo”. While they are sister destinations and they’re just a 20-minute drive from each other, they are two different places with their distinctive vibes.

Where Shanquella and the group stayed: The luxurious Villa Linda in San Jose del Cabo.

Update!

On October 30th, 2024, the news broke that Shanquella’s parents are suing the Cabo 6 for their involvement in their daughter’s death. The lawsuit also includes the FBI for “investigative failures and delaying justice”, since they haven’t made any arrests in the two years this case has been open.

And, they’re calling forDaejhanae Jackson’s extradition to Mexico, because she is wanted for femicide there. We’ll keep you posted on how this develops, but we hope Shanquella’s family can finally get some justice.

Shanquella’s family created a GoFund me campaing to support their legal fees and other expenses. Butm while the campaign is now closed, it provides a really good insight o what the family thinks happened.

A mini-guide on what to do in San Jose del Cabo, Mexico

Both San Jose del Cabo and Los Cabos are beloved by vacationing Americans, but here’s how they’re different:

Los Cabos is mostly where the hard-core partying happens (What happens in Cabo, stays in Cabo!" style), and San Jose del Cabo is a bit more of a chill area where you’ll find bars, restaurants, art galleries, and even some great street food spots too.

I know this story is shocking, and that Mexico sometimes carries a reputation. But trust me, like we always say at True Crime Travelers, these stories are shocking because they’re rare. And Baja California Sur is one of the safest areas in all of Mexico.

When I visit Baja California Sur, I usually prioritize other areas like La Paz, Todos Santos and Cabo Pulmo (one of my favorite places on earth!), but when I do visit San Jose del Cabo and Los Cabos, these are a few of the things I like to do:

➙ Have local craft beer at Baja Brewing Co. in San Jose del Cabo
➙ Have dinner and drinks at La Lupita, in San Jose del Cabo
➙ Go snorkeling and soak up the sun at Santa Maria Beach or Chileno Bay
➙ Have breakfast or brunch at Flora Farms
➙ Go on an Art Walk in San Jose del Cabo (if you visit between November and June!)

Travel Pro Tip from us!

When going to “Cabo”, check which airport you’re flying to, because San Jose del Cabo and Los Cabos even have different airports!
